Feb 9th: Tenneco Towers
Tenneco Towers is considered by many to be the most spectacular artificial reef in the Fort Lauderdale area. Sunk October 3,1985 by the Tenneco Oil Company, the decommissioned oil platform was hauled 950 miles from the Gulf of Mexico on a massive barge. The platform was deployed in three sections, each one a little deeper than the next in a straight east – west line. Hurricane Andrew moved the sections to two distinct sites. One 110’ deep the other is 100’ deep. Without hulls or bulkheads, the skeletal structures provided large areas of hard substrate for corals to grab on to and are now completely covered by a vast array of sponges, gorgonians and invertebrates. Home to schools of Jacks and other large fish Tenneco Towers are often visited by pelagics including and the occasional shark The second dive is on the 3rd reef. This reef two side the east side stays very pretty down to 90’ the top is 40’-50’. The west side is a ledge that bottoms out At 65’.
