June 1st: Jim Atria/Mercedes 2 Tank Wreck Dive

The Jim Atria is a Dutch freighter 227' long and 34' wide. The bow is pointed to the north the wheelhouse is at 95' the sand is at sport limits of 130'. Dutch built freighter, originally named Poinciana, built in 1961. She capsized and sank in the Miami River The ship was raised, towed offshore and then sunk as an artificial reef on September 23, 1987. The name was changed to honor Jim Atria, an avid diver and fisherman. Mercedes - A German freighter built in 1952. She is 194 feet long and has a 31-foot beam. On November 23, 1984, a storm ripped the Mercedes from her anchor and blew her up on Mrs. Post's posh beachfront property in Palm Beach. Abandoned by her owners, she was left on Mrs. Post's beach for three months until she was successfully removed by a salvage company. On March 30, 1985, she was sunk in 97’ of water as an artificial reef. The ravages of hurricane Andrew rolled the Mercedes into a reef. She now rests broken in approximately 90’ of water.
